Over 50 million people use Speechify’s text-to-speech products to turn whatever they’re reading — PDFs, books, Google Docs, news articles, websites — into audio, so they can read faster, read more, and remember more.
Speechify’s products include its iOS app, Android app, Mac app, Chrome Extension, and Web App. Google recently named Speechify the Chrome Extension of the Year and Apple awarded Speechify its Design Award for Inclusivity 2025.
Nearly 200 people around the globe work on Speechify in a fully distributed, no-office setting — including engineers from Amazon, Microsoft, and Google, researchers from leading PhD programmes like Stanford, and founders from high-growth startups like Stripe, Vercel, and Bolt.
With the growth of the Speechify Android app — the most used text-to-speech app in the Play Store — there is now a need for a Tech Lead to help support the growing user base and work on new and exciting projects to push the product forward.
This is a key role for someone who thinks strategically, enjoys fast-paced environments, is passionate about making product decisions, and has a track record of building great user experiences. Speechify is a flat organisation — anyone can become a leader by showing excellent technical skills and consistently delivering results. Work ethic, solid communication, and an obsession with winning are paramount.
The interview process involves several technical interviews, aimed to be completed within one week.
- Own major features end-to-end and work closely with the design team to deliver high-quality user experiences
- Shape the future direction of the Android team
- Own, maintain, and improve reliability metrics for key features
- Participate in cross-team discussions across Product, Design, and Engineering
- Review pull requests and support teammates
- Handle critical issues and cope with unexpected challenges as they arise
- Take ownership of feature releases and provide nightly builds for the QA team
- 5+ years of software engineering experience
- Rock solid experience with Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android Animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit tests
- Experience building or contributing to at least one Android app in production
- Strong familiarity with Android components and the Android ecosystem
- Product design intuition and genuine user empathy
- Understanding of testing philosophy and how to approach writing tests
- Self-drive to improve the app and codebase beyond what’s in the spec
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- User-oriented problem-solving approach with continuous feedback loop from leaders
- Experience building, maintaining, or contributing to open-source Android projects
- Experience with iOS, Web, or Node.js
